Unnpheng Puthvisal discusses his achievement of the Best Luxury Villa Architecture award and his influence on Cambodia's architectural scene.

Following their recent victory at the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, where Archicam was awarded the prestigious title of Best Luxury Villa Architecture in 2023 for their remarkable Khmer Farmhouse Villa project in Cambodia, LUXUO got the opportunity to interview Unnpheng Puthvisal. As the innovative CEO of Archicam, he is leading the transformation of Cambodia’s architectural landscape, and today, he imparts his views and experiences with us.
Luxury Lifestyle Awards (LLA): Congratulations on receiving the Best Luxury Villa Architecture award for the Khmer Farmhouse Villa. What motivated the design of this exceptional project?
Unnpheng Puthvisal (UP): I am profoundly appreciative of this remarkable prize. I wish to convey my gratitude to the project owner, whose assistance was vital in actualizing this project. The notion of the Khmer farmhouse derives directly from its nomenclature. The owner family, who appreciates proximity to nature, expressed a wish to integrate Khmer culture into their residence. This aspiration is in complete harmony with the property's extensive 2-hectare expanse. During the master planning phase, I prioritized the preservation of the existing pond and trees, redesigning the pond into a circular geometric form to improve the overall aesthetic appeal. We realized the family's aspiration to integrate Khmer tradition with their agricultural enthusiasm by including an expansive rice field and diverse crops into the design. The residence has a carved wall that depicts the narrative of Cambodia’s agrarian way of life, accentuated by the characteristic Khmer roof—a hallmark from antiquity that distinguishes a Khmer dwelling. This opulent modern mansion is crafted with numerous attributes customized to the owner's specifications.

LLA: Archicam was founded to promote Cambodia's contemporary architecture internationally. In what manner has receiving this honor corresponded with that mission?
U.P: Securing this honor acts as both motivation and a foundation for Archicam. This signifies the commencement of a trip we go on collectively with other architectural firms who possess analogous objectives and aims. Our shared objective is to enhance the prominence of Cambodia's architecture on the international scene. Concurrently, we endeavor to inspire local residents to enhance their comprehension and knowledge of architecture in its whole.

LLA: Could you elucidate the distinctive obstacles encountered in the design of luxury villas in Cambodia, and how Archicam addressed these issues?
U.P: Each project inherently poses a unique array of obstacles, arising from its specific concept. Surmounting these hurdles necessitates a comprehensive comprehension of the project, facilitating the anticipation and proactive resolution of prospective issues. Moreover, the perpetual enhancement of one’s talents and practices is essential. Integrating the characteristic Khmer Roof, a traditional thatched roof, into the Farmhouse Villa design presented a difficulty due to feasibility issues. Fortunately, contemporary alternatives now exist that mimic the aesthetic of thatch roofs while offering enhanced safety and practicality, as they are both fireproof and waterproof.

LLA: Your architectural firm prioritizes originality and initiative among Khmer architects. In what manner does this dedication to local talent enhance the success of your projects?
In my view, architects frequently derive inspiration from their cultural heritage and historical context for their innovative ideas and conceptions. The capacity to create a novel thought from a preexisting idea, while preserving the core essence of the original inspiration, is essential. As a Cambodian enterprise, Archicam is proficient in integrating Khmer architecture into our projects. We endeavor to generate new scenarios through modernization and innovation in response to the changing living situations throughout generations.
LLA: Archicam's portfolio encompasses a variety of esteemed projects. Could you identify a project that has substantially influenced the urban aesthetics of Cambodia?
I assert that all of Archicam's projects substantially influence Cambodia's urban aesthetics in various respects. Despite its clichéd nature, I am resolute in this conviction. The effect is contingent upon the project's characteristics and its societal importance. The Khmer Farmhouse project, covering 2 hectares, significantly improves Cambodia's urban landscape. The master plan, which uniquely incorporates Khmer culture and architecture within a contemporary framework, distinguishes it in both local and global contexts.

LLA: The Legion of Honor conferred by past and present monarchs signifies your remarkable achievements to Cambodian architecture. In what ways has this acknowledgment impacted your professional trajectory and your methodology in architecture?
Receiving recognition from His Majesty is a genuine source of pride and distinction for us. This acknowledgment reflects our diligent efforts and substantial contributions to the discipline of architecture. This esteemed accolade serves as a significant source of motivation, inspiring Archicam to exert further effort. Our objective is to elevate the visibility of Khmer Architecture internationally and to cultivate partnerships with major firms.
LLA: Sustainability is an increasing priority in the field of architecture. In what ways does Archicam include sustainable techniques into its luxury villa designs?

U.P: Sustainable architecture has garnered considerable acclaim and has been extensively debated. This movement presumably arises from society's recognition that human advancement has frequently incurred the depletion of natural resources, resulting in significant pollution, particularly within the construction industry. Consequently, sustainable initiatives are being widely implemented to alleviate these effects. At Archicam, we actively promote sustainable development by integrating water features, planting trees, and adding significant green spaces in practically all our projects. We are dedicated to safeguarding green spaces and constructing edifices that harness natural light and ventilation systems, with the objective of conserving energy and mitigating heat.

LLA: In luxury architecture, clients frequently possess distinctive and exacting demands. How does Archicam guarantee customer pleasure while preserving the integrity of its designs?
U.P: While each client possesses distinct objectives and expectations, we, as architects, consider it our responsibility to steer them towards effectively meeting their needs. By cultivating their trust through our expertise and experience, we are obligated to deepen their comprehension of their requirements and how architecture may fulfill those demands. We are dedicated to delivering the highest quality services available. Team collaboration is essential for the successful execution of every project.

LLA: What innovative trends or technology do you foresee influencing the future of luxury villa architecture, and how is Archicam maintaining its competitive edge?
Technology and the quest for superior quality are essential in defining the future of luxury villas. I contend that the advancement of this sector hinges on the seamless integration of technology and superior design in functional initiatives. This integration will delineate the forthcoming generation of luxury villas.

LLA: As the CEO of Archicam, you possess a great vision for the aesthetic appeal of your city and nation. Could you articulate your long-term objectives for Archicam and its contribution to the architectural development in Cambodia?
As the CEO of Archicam and an architect, my objective is to partner with other committed Khmer architects to elevate and exhibit Khmer architecture internationally. The groundwork of Khmer Architecture was established by our top architects in the 1960s. It is essential for us, as the forthcoming generation of Cambodian architects, to collaborate and enhance the potential of Khmer Architecture. This can be accomplished through study, the adoption of innovation, and the utilization of worldwide breakthroughs to enhance our architectural legacy.
Thank you, Mr. Puthvisal, for imparting your views and experiences to us.
