The chief executive officer of Manolo Blahnik candidly discusses her experience leading a renowned footwear brand.

With the launch of the Manolo’s Silhouettes capsule, Kristina Blahnik discusses her enduring passion for footwear and her efforts to advance the Manolo Blahnik heritage.
“I was indeed born in a shoebox; one of my earliest recollections is from when I was approximately eight years old, seated on my uncle’s lap while observing him design shoes,” relates Kristina Blahnik. Although many have donned their mother's oversized heels, few can claim to have uncomfortably paraded in Blahniks, especially in the company of the legendary designer himself. For Kristina, the 81-year-old Manolo Blahnik transcends the role of a fashion visionary; he is her uncle and a parental influence who instilled in her the principles of workmanship, tradition, and innovation.

Kristina, a former architect, unexpectedly transitioned into the family business by assuming responsibility for its production logistics for one season. In this serendipitous turn of events that ignited her enthusiasm for the sector, she dedicated several years to acquiring comprehensive knowledge about the company and ultimately became the chief executive officer in 2013.

Possessing keen commercial insight and a robust collaborative ethos, she reflects on few of the most rewarding projects she has led during her tenure with the organization. “Inaugurating the pop-up at Liberty’s in 2010 was one of the most audacious endeavors I have ever undertaken.” My architectural firm developed it, and we created numerous bespoke things for it—all within a few 10 months,” she discloses. Other significant collaborations over the years encompass a highly sought-after capsule with pop icon Rihanna, in addition to collections with Vetements and Birkenstock. Kristina has since guided the renowned Spanish label in a new direction—one that seamlessly integrates heritage and modernity. “We enjoy exploring innovative shapes and materials in conjunction with the traditional styles we provide.” “For me, it is essential to take our time and trust our instincts,” states Kristina.
