The long-awaited electric sports car was first introduced as a prototype in 2017, with initial production once targeted for 2020.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has once more altered the timeline for the elusive next-generation Tesla Roadster. Musk revealed on X that the much-anticipated EV supercar's major unveiling will "probably" occur next month, establishing a new target for late April 2026. Following an original suggestion of an April Fool’s Day demonstration during a late-2025 appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, the tech mogul has marginally postponed the schedule while promoting the forthcoming vehicle as “a banger next-level.”

The next-generation Tesla Roadster has experienced numerous delays since its initial unveiling as a prototype in 2017. Initially scheduled for release in 2020, the all-electric vehicle has been persistently delayed as the business focused on expanding its primary models, such as the Model Y and Cybertruck, in addition to its autonomous driving technology. The ongoing reorganisation has strained the patience of early adopters who committed significant pre-order deposits, varying from $50,000 USD for basic models to an impressive $250,000 USD for the exclusive Founders Series.

Notwithstanding the prevailing scepticism, actual impetus is finally developing behind the scenes. Tesla has just submitted fresh trademark applications to the USPTO, indicating a little more angular roofline silhouette in comparison to its initial concept. The automaker is evidently advancing, as seen by recent patent applications for a unified composite seat and increased recruitment efforts for Roadster manufacturing engineers. Nevertheless, Musk's change in wording from "demo" to "unveil" has led industry experts to speculate that a significant redesign is underway, perhaps delaying commercial production until 2027.
