Device continuity, a novel operating system design, and enhanced Apple Intelligence - key takeaways from WWDC25.

Apple's WWDC25 focused unexpectedly more on harmony than on hardware. The Cupertino corporation conveyed a succinct message: although life is intricate, technology should remain uncomplicated. In the absence of new devices, the focus transitioned to software, particularly a cohesive and refined experience across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Vision Pro.
At WWDC25, Apple introduces a novel visual language termed Liquid Glass. It is not genuine glass; however, Apple characterizes it as both expressive and consistent with the existing OS design, wherein a solitary dynamic substance reflects and refracts its surroundings, altering in real-time to improve user focus and clarity. It is remarkable—consider it a dynamic glass interface that is adaptable, fluid, and visually reactive. An unprecedented endeavor, distinctly different from recent offerings by Apple.

What has captivated Apple enthusiasts is that the new operating system design constitutes the foundation of the recently unveiled iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26, signifying the inaugural instance of a cohesive design language across all Apple platforms, with 26 serving as a benchmark for the brand's new streamlined OS-naming conventions. Alan Dye, Apple's VP of Human Interface Design, states that the redesign fundamentally reinterprets the interface to enhance even the most little interactions, rendering them "more fun and magical."

Apple is providing iPad users with increased workspace and enhanced control over their operations. iPadOS 26 introduces a robust new windowing system that integrates desktop-style multitasking with the intuitive experience anticipated by iPad users. The core of the upgrade involves a significant reevaluation of application functionality under a multitasking context. Users may now flexibly resize application windows, position them wherever on the screen, and maintain numerous windows simultaneously. Familiar functions such as shut, minimize, and resize are now integrated, and window tiling designed exclusively for iPad enables users to position applications effortlessly with a simple gesture. iPadOS retains the resizing settings of users, reopening applications in the previously established dimensions and location. With the addition of the Preview app, the iPad will resemble a MacBook more than ever.
The continuity between devices further consolidates its influence. The iPhone's Phone application is now accessible on Mac, allowing Live Activities from your phone to appear on your Mac, enabling you to take action without changing screens or even picking up your phone. Users of Apple’s current MacBook Air equipped with the M4 chip are aware of its exceptional performance, and the recent upgrade enhances its flawless functionality.

WWDC25 underscores the increasing sophistication of Apple Intelligence. Innovative tools such as Live Translation dismantle language barriers instantaneously, whether engaging in conversation, messaging, or striving for comprehension. Genmoji and Image Playground undergo whimsical enhancements, while visual intelligence now encompasses all content displayed on your screen. Users can search, shop, or obtain AI-driven insights using ChatGPT or Google Gemini, based on their real-time viewing context.
Even outdated applications are undergoing enhancements. WWDC25 demonstrates the Phone app's implementation of a streamlined, unified interface that consolidates Favourites, Recents, and Voicemail. Call Screening, a much anticipated function, responds to unidentified numbers on your behalf and provides a summary of the caller's purpose, alleviating the need for uncomfortable speculation. Messages become increasingly social with personalized chat backdrops, message screening, and rapid polls to facilitate group consensus without the necessity of app switching.
