Yoshitomo Nara's All Within the Detour Presents 162 New Pictures in Taiwan, Hokkaido, and Kōbe

Yoshitomo Nara's inaugural extensive photography show in Taiwan, All Within the Detour, is presently displayed at Huashan 1914 Creative Park in Taipei. The exhibition, organised by Big Art and the Yoshitomo Nara Foundation, showcases 162 newly created pieces that depict landscapes and memories from Taiwan, Hokkaido, and Kōbe Island. This signifies a substantial broadening of Nara's artistic oeuvre, providing viewers with an uncommon insight into his photography perspective beyond the renowned paintings and sculptures for which he is most recognised.

The show emphasises Nara’s attunement to quotidian interactions, featuring photos that capture ephemeral smiles, roadside illumination, and the delicate sounds of wind traversing the landscape. In contrast to his paintings, which frequently depict stylised individuals, these images prioritise direct observation and emotional impact. Prominent works encompass series that contrast urban and rural landscapes, alongside intimate portraits that convey his own experiences. Nara has characterised the pictures as grounded in his principles, encapsulating "emotional, historical, and commemorative" attributes that convert landscapes into profoundly personal narratives.

The 162 photographs, shown in the West 5 Hall of the Red Brick Area, serve as parts of a journey extending from the north to the south. The exhibition showcases the geographic diversity of Taiwan and Japan's northern frontiers while simultaneously acting as a conduit between the artist's present perspective and his profound memories. The artworks convey a sense of liberation and warmth that contrasts with the heaviness of his conventional art, presenting a novel perspective on his artistic evolution. Entry to the exhibition is complimentary but necessitates a reservation through the official LINE of Huashan 1914 Creative Park.
