Signifying a significant transformation in the generative domain, OpenAI has officially discontinued its well publicised Sora video platform. The unexpected statement comes within three months following the artificial intelligence company's landmark licensing agreement and $1 billion USD investment arrangement with the entertainment conglomerate Disney.

Official comments indicate that OpenAI is terminating all initiatives linked to its Sora video model, encompassing the standalone consumer application, the developer API, and associated video functionalities. The company announced the decision on social media, expressing gratitude to early adopters and producers, while assuring future information on how users can save their generated content prior to the platform's complete shutdown. The abrupt decision effectively nullifies the eagerly awaited Disney collaboration intended to include over 200 cherished characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars into user-generated videos.

“We are bidding farewell to Sora.” Thank you to anyone that collaborated with Sora, disseminated it, and fostered a community around it. OpenAI stated, "Your contributions with Sora were significant, and we acknowledge that this news is disheartening." “We will provide additional information shortly, including timelines for the application and API, as well as specifics regarding the preservation of your work.” In reaction to the transition, Disney has officially acknowledged the terminated relationship, underscoring a mutual respect for OpenAI's choice to withdraw from the video generation sector and realign its internal goals. The entertainment giant stated through Variety, "As the burgeoning AI sector progresses swiftly, we acknowledge OpenAI's choice to withdraw from the video generation market and redirect its focus." “We value the productive collaboration between our teams and the insights gained from it. We will persist in our engagement with AI platforms to discover innovative methods to connect with fans while responsibly adopting new technologies that honour intellectual property and the rights of creators.”
