“A Species Between Worlds: Our Nature, Our Screens” will be exhibited at Somerset House’s USA Pavilion for one month.

The London Design Biennale occurs from June 1 to 25 at Somerset House, with this year's topic being "The Global Game: Remapping Collaborations." Under the creative leadership of Nieuwe Instituut, individuals can engage in a variety of activities pertaining to art, inventions, and other interactive projects.
A notable feature of this month-long exhibition is a boutique display entitled “A Species Between Worlds: Our Nature, Our Screens,” created by the esteemed artist, photographer, author, and lecturer John Mack. He is the founder of the non-profit organization Life Calling, dedicated to preserving humanity in the digital era. The exhibition at the London Design Biennale marks Mack's UK debut following a successful presentation in New York City last year.
The London Design Biennale provides attendees the chance to engage with diverse designs from over 40 international artists and designers. For instance, users can inhabit a space pod, see an AI robot, tour a virtual garden, engage in a multi-sensory bread-baking session, and communicate via an online game. Furthermore, notable designers and thinking leaders will deliver presentations on subjects from architecture to future automobiles.
On the inaugural day, VIPs, the media, and invited ticket holders interacted with the London Design Biennale jury, followed by a medal ceremony in the afternoon. The guest of honour for the occasion was Lord Parkinson, Minister for Arts and Heritage, and DCMS Lord Minister.
Three of the four medals at the London Design Biennale were conferred, with the fourth to be presented on June 21 following a public vote. The awards are awarded annually to the pavilions that have provided the most outstanding installations at the exhibition, honoring the Biennale’s heritage of cultural interchange and innovative creative solutions.
Poland's "Poetics of Necessity" received the London Design Biennale 2023 Medal for the most exceptional overall contribution, and Abu Dhabi's "Formation of Soof" was honored with the London Design Biennale Theme Medal for the most inspired interpretation of the theme. Taiwan's "Visible Shop" received the Best Design Medal at the London Design Biennale for outstanding design excellence.
In addition to the “A Species Between Worlds: Our Nature, Our Screens” exhibition, on 13 June, Mack’s Life Calling will present “Remapping Our Nature in the Digital Age,” a gathering of luminaries from academics, arts and culture, business, and technology. Mack will commence the day's proceedings with a discourse titled “How AI will Never Surpass Our Humanity,” serving as the catalyst for subsequent conversations regarding humanity's connection with rising digital technology.

On 30 May, during a speaking engagement at Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI, Mack elaborated on the importance of maintaining our humanity among developments in Artificial Intelligence. He got the opportunity to have an insightful interview with acclaimed historian and academic Yuval Noah Harari, during which they explored the intricacies of technology, mankind, and psychology. Mack seized the opportunity before to the official inauguration of the esteemed London Design Biennale to partner with the digital transformation firm Globant.
Mack expresses enthusiasm for the London Design Biennale and the show chosen for the USA pavilion. “It is revolutionary as we are integrating the contemporary issue of AI into the current design landscape and examining how AI and technology are shaping both our species and our environment.”
“I sincerely hope that attendees will depart from the exhibition with an altered perception of their own reality and enhanced agency in shaping their lives.”
Ultimately, Mack conveys that although the audience is captivated by design, he aims to prioritize interior self-design over merely external design. He posits that the designer and their works are inseparable, inquiring how we may cultivate our designs to embody our intrinsic humanity.
