Animated video artworks extend his "Homunculus" sculpture series into strange, science fiction dreamscapes.

Gary Card's Homunculand installation at W1 Curates converts Oxford Street into an imaginative digital realm. The exhibition, displayed on W1 Curates’ huge outdoor screens and in the immersive underground gallery, expands upon Card’s renowned Homunculus sculpture collection, initially revealed at Dover Street Market in 2022.
In this latest incarnation, the artist animates his surreal figurative compositions, leading viewers into a dreamlike realm where eclectic individuals navigate extraterrestrial terrains adorned with monumental antiquities. The show presents a fusion of science fiction adventure and classic RPG trailer, providing a transformative experience that integrates Card's sculptural artistry with digital narrative.
This strange dreamscape is artistically created using scans of Card’s original sculptures, which are rearranged into hills and valleys adorned with “colossal relics of ages past” and “disembodied heads.” The project embodies Card's enduring obsession with the cartoon iconography of his youth and his ongoing investigation of mediums and size.
Homunculand is exhibited at W1 Curates until January 7, 2026 at W1 Curates, 161, 167 Oxford Street, London W1D 2JP, United Kingdom.
