The Extra-Plat returns with a sleek, platinum makeover. This latest version strips back the color for a minimalist, all-grey aesthetic that emphasizes the watch’s signature slim profile.

Since the brand's revival under La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton (in conjunction with Gerald Genta), Daniel Roth has concentrated on reintroducing the iconic ellipsocurvex design of Monsieur Roth, coupled with the meticulous craftsmanship of previous works. After the introduction of the Tourbillon model, offered in yellow and rose gold, as well as platinum, Daniel Roth concentrated on the fundamentals with the Extra-Plat, a slender, sophisticated time-only model featuring an exquisite hand-wound movement. The Daniel Roth Extra-Plat now comes in a monochrome platinum and anthracite variant, following the path of its more intricate counterpart. Disregarding the intricate and elaborately designed Extra Plat Rose Gold Skeleton launched earlier this year, which features an openworked movement, the platinum edition of the Daniel Roth Extra-Plat completes the trilogy for this model, succeeding the Yellow Gold Souscription and the Rose Gold variant. In comparison to the two preceding editions, the majority of the specs remain unaltered. It pertains to materials and hues. However, this may exert a more significant influence than anticipated.

The initial two editions were vibrant and visually impactful due to their color combinations, however the new Extra-Plat Platinum appears significantly more subdued and understated, owing to its monochromatic color scheme – our preferred version thus far, as one might expect, considering the magazine's title. Disregarding personal factors, we are examining the identical double-ellipse-shaped (or ellipsocurvex) casing, measuring 38.6mm in length and 35.5mm in width, now constructed from the most exquisite material: platinum. The DR Extra-Plat, with a total thickness of 7.7mm, is marginally larger and thicker than the original Extra Plat Automatic reference C107, however it retains a remarkably attractive design as a time-only watch, exhibiting its own distinct character. Sapphire crystals encase the outside.

To enhance the frigid hue of platinum, Daniel Roth employed the identical color palette utilized in the Tourbillon variant, incorporating anthracite and black components. In contrast to the yellow gold edition with a Clous de Paris guilloché, but akin to the rose gold variant, the solid gold dial is embellished with a pinstripe guilloché pattern (guilloché en ligne in French), a traditional design previously employed by Daniel Roth, now executed in-house at La Fabrique du Temps. The hour chapter ring, also in gold, is completed in silver to correspond with the case, featuring a filet sauté border and black lettering. The hour and minute hands, devoid of seconds, are crafted in black, yielding a subdued aesthetic.

Concealed beneath the sapphire caseback is the calibre DR002, a manually wound movement created by Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini, the leaders of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. The movement is contemporary in its specifications—4Hz frequency, free-sprung balance wheel, 65-hour power reserve—yet retains a traditional execution. The calibre DR001 Tourbillon maintains its unique visual aesthetic, with hand-polished bevels with a domed profile, precise internal angles, black polished steel components, slender Geneva stripes, perlage, polished countersinks, and bevelled spokes on the wheels.
