Taking over the iconic Malt Store on Swanston Street, Birkenstock’s latest flagship experience anchors itself around a massive 81-square-meter dedicated workshop built to restore and elevate worn footwear.

Birkenstock - 551 Swanston Street, Carlton VIC 3053, Australia
Birkenstock has inaugurated its Melbourne flagship within the Malt Store, a structure erected in 1904 as part of the Carlton & United Breweries complex, the original site of Carlton Draught. The store's hallmark is its repair workshop, which, at over 81 square meters, is the largest Birkenstock repair facility globally, executing over 5,000 repairs annually and prioritizing durability within the brand's Melbourne retail proposition.
Expert technicians provide comprehensive Birkenstock maintenance and restoration services on-site, including heel replacements, buckle repairs, sole retreads, and entire footbed replacements, utilizing specialized tools and technology alongside decades of brand-specific expertise. Reclaimed leather and other viable materials are repurposed whenever feasible. The workshop is consistently observable through black steel-framed windows from inside the store, integrating the repair process into the retail environment rather than relegating it to a back-of-house operation. What commenced as a modest endeavor in a Mount Waverley garage now resides in a purpose-built facility of unprecedented scale for the brand globally.

The store's design philosophy permeates every surface. Circular chandeliers constructed from recycled aluminum emit a warm glow over exposed brick and black steel columns, while recycled lumber with diverse grain and hue adorns the walls and display shelves, reflecting the color and texture of the referenced cork footbed. A cobbled bluestone threshold at the entrance evokes Melbourne’s traditional laneways, distinguished with a bespoke manhole cover imprinted with the Birkenstock emblem. At the center of the floor, a sculptural representation of the original Birkenstock footbed emphasizes its six anatomical points, accompanied by the phrase “WALKING AS NATURE INTENDED.” Adjacent open timber frames exhibit the unrefined materials of the footwear in order: cork granules, jute, EVA, leather, and buckles, accompanied by historical marketing visuals illustrating the brand's development on the walls.
Two separate zones further impede the experience. A matte black fireplace, accompanied by lounge chairs at one end of the store, establishes a retreat conducive to relaxation, while the Care Essentials foot and body care collection is centered around a ceramic basin integrated into a timber counter, providing a sensory context for the product range instead of a mere shelf display. The complete product range includes the Arizona, Boston, and Madrid styles, as well as seasonal collections, special releases from the Birkenstock 1774 line, and the Care Essentials range. The Carlton opening integrates three hitherto distinct functions: retail, repair, and the brand's Australian headquarters, all within a single location. This marks almost ten years of Birkenstock's presence in Clifton Hill and constitutes the brand's most substantial investment in the Australian market thus far.
