With its debut basketball prototype, adidas pioneers a new application of 3D printing—reshaping the future of sport through innovation.

adidas is officially advancing performance footwear into the future. At a special Pro Day event held at the newly rebuilt Innovation Lab in its North America headquarters in Portland, the sportswear giant introduced Project R.A.P. (Radical Athlete Perception). The innovative platform represents a significant advancement in the brand's 3D-printing initiatives, employing sophisticated additive manufacturing to fundamentally transform athletes' experiences of movement, support, and performance on the court.
To demonstrate the full capabilities of the new Project R.A.P. platform, adidas unveiled its inaugural sports performance application: a completely 3D-printed basketball shoe. The design, centred on athlete movement and perception, is crafted to provide a wholly customised fit. Advanced 3D-printing techniques enable the shoe's interior structure to be precisely optimised for specific levels of support, cushioning, and rigidity unattainable by conventional sneaker manufacturing methods. The futuristic footwear, albeit recently unveiled, has previously undergone rigorous testing in premier college basketball competitions. The 3D-printed replica just made its widely publicised debut on the floor during the NCAA tournament, worn by exceptional 5-star guard Darryn Peterson of the Kansas Jayhawks.

By uniting athletes and designers in a collaborative environment for real-time testing, learning, and iteration, adidas demonstrates that its substantial investment in additive technology transcends mere lifestyle and running models. The basketball silhouette is the initial release, but the brand has also announced that a 3D-printed American football cleat, employing the identical Project R.A.P. base, is under development. The official name and sale pricing for the 3D-printed adidas Project R.A. have yet to be disclosed. The P. basketball shoe is anticipated to be available in retail stores in the forthcoming months.
