Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has finalized the Greater Bay Area Sports Center in Guangzhou, China, a substantial complex intended to serve as a focal point for a swiftly growing waterfront hub in the Nansha District of the city. Located on the western bank of the Pearl River, the complex has a 60,000-seat stadium, a 20,000-seat arena, and a 4,000-seat aquatics facility within a 70-hectare riverside park.

ZHA's distinctive flowing architectural style for the complex is profoundly anchored in the region's maritime identity and cultural setting. The sinuous forms and sculpted contours of the primary edifices are directly inspired by the tapering hulls of old Song Dynasty vessels, which historically established the Pearl River as a prominent hub of international commerce. These architectural features guarantee comfort in Guangzhou's subtropical climate, with the stadium roof constructed to shield spectators from precipitation and sunlight while facilitating the ventilation of warm air to sustain airflow.

The project offers premier infrastructure for athletes and spectators while integrating landscaped public areas that promote recreation and community involvement throughout the expanding Greater Bay Area. The swimming center features a 50-meter pool and diving well for training and competition, while outside fields and jogging tracks serve local schools and sports clubs.

The project also incorporates environmental resiliency. The riverside park has wetlands that serve as flood mitigation, regulating surplus water during significant sea-level variations. Natural cooling solutions, such as shaded areas and ventilation aligned with prevailing summer winds, diminish dependence on mechanical systems.

The center will host its inaugural event on December 5, featuring four sold-out acts.
