Franz-Josef Baur, popularly referred to as FJBAUR, is a conceptual German pop artist who endeavors to uncover beauty in the ordinariness of daily life, presenting it through his unique lens of vibrant and unfiltered expression. Franz-Josef Baur, having spent part of his youth and adolescence in southern Germany, which significantly influenced his artistic expression, briefly trained as a chef before returning to his primary passion for art, ultimately becoming one of Europe’s most dynamic and original artists. The artist currently resides in Vienna and Berlin, drawing inspiration from museums and art galleries in Vienna and throughout Europe. The reclusive artist engages with MEGAMIND to discuss many aspects of art and reveals his intentions for 2024.

Tell us a little bit about your background. When and how did you fall in love with art?

Life, in its vibrancy and enchantment, offers endless opportunities that one should always embrace. The foundational years of my childhood in Germany are the base layer of my character, which evolved through youthful exploration—both refining and deconstructing my perceptions—leading to a mature appreciation and love for art in my later years.

What materials do you prefer to work with? How do you select your materials?

I love working with different materials, whether it’s resin, plastic, wool, fabric, or paper. Currently, I have a preference for natural materials. I trust serendipity in my selection process; it has to feel right, and then that’s the material I choose for each creative phase.

You stated some years ago, "my style is predominantly Pop art." I enjoy working across disciplines, specifically in art and design as well as fashion. Is this still applicable in your most recent work?

Indeed, my most recent endeavor is a clear embodiment of that idea. It is a newspaper series that derives new inspiration from the natural environment.

Which colors do you favor for the year 2024?

Traditionally, I would assert that pink is my preferred color; but, throughout the years, my displays at Art Basel Miami have captivated me with the alluring pastels of South Florida, and this inclination persists until 2024. This year, I am especially attracted to a vivid, saturated “Miami Blue” that embodies the vibrancy and energetic essence of the locale.

Where does the inspiration for your work come from?

My work is deeply influenced by the details and emotions found in daily experiences, capturing the essence of life’s moments that often go unnoticed, and it’s underpinned by confidence in my personal vision and artistic intuition.

What emotions do you aspire for visitors to feel when observing your art?

Upon encountering my art, I aspire for viewers to have an intense sensation of unblemished enjoyment, akin to being enveloped in the vibrant delight that colors may elicit.

You previously stated, “my primary objective in my work is to enlighten individuals about our values, the true values of life in compassion, and to prevent their complete loss.” Could you provide additional information on that subject?

I aim to highlight the fundamental qualities of compassion and mindfulness that are frequently obscured in our rapid, contemporary environment. My art seeks to inspire contemplation and a reestablishment of essential human values that cultivate a compassionate community and enhance our lives beyond just material achievement.

Is the creation of a new artwork in your situation a solitary endeavor?

I flourish via engagement and reciprocity. Although I lack a team of builders, the creative process is enhanced by an ongoing discourse that informs and inspires my work.

What can art enthusiasts and collectors anticipate from you throughout 2024?

In 2024, I shall concentrate rigorously on the production of sculptural artworks. I intend to utilize vivid hues and dynamic shapes.

What is your dream project this year 2024?

Each year, I dedicate myself to realising one dream project, and for 2024, my focus has been on a daily collection of materials that has spanned the entire year. This meticulous process is infused with a deep sense of local identity. Through this endeavor, I’m not just creating art but also weaving a narrative that captures the spirit of the city day by day.

Are there any artists who have inspired you on the contemporary art scene?

Daniel Buren has recently been an inspiring figure, with his distinctive modern and minimalistic style. His approach is characterised by a strong conceptual framework that challenges the traditional boundaries of art, merging the aesthetic with the social and engaging with the urban landscape in a way that is both international and free-thinking.

What is your perspective on the modern art system as an artist?

The comprehensive art "system" can be constrictive, governed by implicit norms that appear elitist and haughty, determining what is acknowledged as 'legitimate' art. Nonetheless, the environment is evolving, creating many opportunities for artists to showcase their work in atypical venues. I was recently invited to display my paintings on the billboards of NYC's Times Square, which I regard as a tribute to the growth of art, reinforcing my conviction that it is surpassing the limitations of conventional exhibition locations.

What is the most fulfilling aspect of being an artist?

Provoking emotions in the observer and encouraging them to reflect momentarily. My art is to offer individuals a chance to contemplate their observations and connect with their emotions. It profoundly satisfies me when my creations forge a connection and make a lasting impact.

Where can our readers and art enthusiasts acquire your works online?

I mostly engage in online sales, utilizing Instagram and various social media channels to display and sell my artwork. Art aficionados and prospective buyers may contact me through these means at any time for queries or to facilitate a purchase of my works.

Which museum in Europe do you prefer?

I cannot identify a singular option! The Tate Modern, with its formidable architecture and cutting-edge contemporary art displays, consistently inspires awe in me. The museum's remarkable architectural style and its intellectually stimulating exhibits of modern and contemporary art render it an essential destination for anyone fervent about artistic innovation and expression.

Which museum in Vienna is your favorite?

The MAK (Museum of Applied Arts) and the Heidi Horten Museum are among my preferred collections in Vienna. These museums really resonate with me as they distinctly exhibit a vast collection of Pop Art and Experimental Art.

What is your ultimate mantra in life?

Generosity unlocks the fullness of life. If you give love, love comes back.

In my journey as an artist, I’ve discovered that generosity is not just a moral choice, but a creative one too. Sharing my work openly, engaging, and supporting fellow artists has not only enriched my own experience but also expanded the reach and impact of my art. To give freely of ourselves, our time, and our talents, we open up avenues for new inspiration, collaboration, and ultimately, a deeper connection with our audience and the world at large.
