Starbucks has officially denied reports that it was considering acquiring Chipotle Mexican Grill, putting an end to speculation surrounding a potential $39 billion USD takeover.

The rumors emerged after the Financial Times reported that Starbucks had consulted advisers in recent months about a possible acquisition. The proposed deal attracted considerable attention, partly because Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol previously led Chipotle for six years before joining the coffee giant in September 2024.

The initial report prompted a swift market reaction on October 8, with Chipotle shares climbing approximately 6% while Starbucks stock came under pressure. Analysts questioned the financial implications of such a large acquisition, particularly as Starbucks continues investing in its operational turnaround.

A potential merger could have offered Chipotle opportunities to accelerate its international expansion through Starbucks' extensive global network. However, the transaction would also have presented significant financing challenges and potential distractions from Starbucks' ongoing restructuring efforts.

On October 12, 2026, Starbucks clarified its position, stating that it was not buying Chipotle. The company reaffirmed its commitment to its Back to Starbucks strategy, which focuses on improving customer experience, store operations and long-term growth.

The statement effectively closes the latest chapter of takeover speculation, leaving both restaurant chains focused on their respective business priorities.
