Netflix has officially resumed its role in the production of Legendary's live-action Gundam film. Deadline claims that the streaming giant has obtained distribution rights for the prominent adaption, which is expected to feature Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo. The transition is a pivotal achievement for the project, which has undergone years of preparation, now securing a definitive location as it readies to adapt the expansive “Mobile Suit” universe into a live-action film.

The project is a partnership between Legendary Pictures and franchise proprietor Bandai Namco Filmworks. Jim Mickle, renowned for his contributions to Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, is fulfilling the roles of director and screenplay. The precise narrative is undisclosed, however the film is anticipated to be based on the "Universal Century" timeline, a future in which humanity has colonised space and disputes are resolved by pilots controlling large mechanised suits called Gundams.

Speculation is that the film may draw inspiration from Mobile Suit Gundam. The 08th MS Team centres on a realistic and intense conflict in Southeast Asia. Sweeney is allegedly considering the role of a Zeon pilot, while Centineo is anticipated to depict her adversary and romantic interest from the Earth Federation. The project seeks to encapsulate the technical magnitude and political intrigue that transformed the 1979 original series into a worldwide cultural sensation and a multi-billion dollar merchandising empire.
