For more than two centuries, Penfolds has been immersed in the art of winemaking, combining artistry, tradition, and innovation. Since its inception in 1844, Penfolds has undertaken a quest to explore grape types and terroirs and to achieve an ideal equilibrium between tradition and innovation. Although its origins are firmly established in Australia, its aspirations have expanded beyond national boundaries in pursuit of producing exceptional wines.

Although red and white wines continue to be Penfolds' primary emphasis, the winemaker embarked on a secondary endeavor by visiting Champagne and engaging with the Champagne House Thiénot. A significant milestone was achieved in the esteemed French region, renowned for its prestigious sparkling wines, with the introduction of Penfolds Cuvée Brut NV Champagne to commemorate Penfolds' 180th anniversary.

Penfolds' interest in sparkling wines is longstanding. In the early 1900s, Frank Penfold Hyland purchased the Michinbury vineyard and designated Leo Buring, who was trained in the Champagne style, to manage production. Penfolds' reputation expanded over the years, and although Minchinbury was divested in the 1970s, the ethos of innovation in sparkling winemaking persisted, culminating in this newest refined and modern creation infused with Penfolds' distinctive signature.

In a market dominated by established brands, Champagne Thiénot established its niche in 1985, emphasizing a contemporary, fruit-centric methodology in Champagne production. The Penfolds Cuvée Brut NV is a product of partnership, integrating the finest elements of both Champagne Thiénot and Penfolds' expertise. Under the supervision of Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago and Thiénot’s Chef de Cave Nicolas Uriel, a blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Pinot Meunier, and 20% Chardonnay was established, with each varietal contributing its distinct character to the final composition.

Gago described the Penfolds Cuvée Brut NV Champagne as “an ideal aperitif Champagne for Spring (and throughout the year!) — characterized by purity, freshness, and a relaxed demeanor,” and “approachable — a style that does not confront but rather embraces.” Emotional, not intellectual. In that regard, the liquid is refined and accessible. The nose reveals an aromatic bouquet of white florals, including lily, chamomile, and Mexican orange blossom, elevated by a fine, lasting mousse. Nuances of roasted almonds, vanilla bean, and custard apple impart a soothing warmth, enhancing its aromatic intricacy.

The palate is where the Penfolds Cuvée Brut NV Champagne excels. Vibrant citrus flavors invigorate the palate, evoking a newly baked Tarte au Citron meringuée, complemented by subtle hints of raspberry pastille and nougat. A polished acidity enhances the taste, with a sherbet-like vibrancy culminating in a crisp, unadulterated finish. Delicate and delicate, this Champagne does not seek attention but rather encourages admiration – effortless yet refined, joyous yet enduring.

Penfolds' expansion of its global presence is exemplified by the release of this Cuvée Brut NV Champagne, reflecting its unwavering commitment to excellence. The trip from the vines of Australia to the chalky soils of Champagne has been remarkable, with each sip revealing a history that is both unfolded and revisited.
