The proprietor of Meta has invested 15 billion USD to repurchase roughly 50% of the equity in Scale AI, a firm specializing in synthetic artificial intelligence development. This is seen as a costly wager.

Meta Platforms is nearing the finalization of a historic $15 billion investment in Scale AI, a strategic initiative that would grant it a 49% equity position in the preeminent artificial intelligence firm. This is regarded as the most substantial external investment ever made by the tech conglomerate led by Mark Zuckerberg.

Sources familiar with the agreement indicate that the emphasis of this acquisition encompasses both technology and talent.

Upon the completion of the transaction, Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, a prominent figure in the AI sector, will report directly to Mark Zuckerberg.

Analysts assert that Zuckerberg is prepared to invest this substantial sum to recruit Wang to his team. Zuckerberg, in collaboration with Wang, is assembling a team of approximately 50 preeminent specialists to advance Meta's artificial intelligence objectives, particularly the development of a super artificial general intelligence (AGI) system.

Meta's investment in Scale AI is perceived as a critical initiative to compete with leading rivals in the AI sector, where it is regarded as lagging.

The company's existing Meta AI engine is reportedly inefficient and lacks the intelligence of competing AI products in the market.

Scale AI has been recognized as the "silent giant" in the AI sector, specialized in the provision of premium training data to prominent technology firms as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Meta.

The company has secured multiple significant contracts with governments globally, including a five-year agreement with Qatar to automate public and healthcare services, as well as a multimillion-dollar contract with the US Department of Defense to create a flagship military program.

Scale AI's projected revenue for 2025 is anticipated to attain $2 billion.

Meta's action occurs as prominent technology firms are investing substantial capital in AI companies to enhance their standings and capitalize on advanced technologies.

Amazon has invested a minimum of $8 billion in Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup established by former OpenAI leaders. Google has invested a minimum of $3 billion in Anthropic.

Microsoft spearheads a $13 billion investment in OpenAI, facilitating the incorporation of ChatGPT and Sora AI functionalities into its offerings and securing a share of OpenAI's revenue.

What is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)?

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is characterized as a superintelligent artificial system capable of executing any cognitive task that a person can complete. AGI has the capacity to learn, reason, and make decisions like to humans, exhibiting significant flexibility and customisation.

In contrast to limited artificial intelligence (ANI) systems that focus on a specialized domain, artificial general intelligence (AGI) possesses extensive knowledge across various domains and, notably, has the capacity to acquire new information and solve issues autonomously, without human assistance. An AGI system could respond to inquiries, provide content, and operate vehicles.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is regarded as the paramount objective in the evolution of artificial intelligence. The emergence of AGI raises significant concerns regarding ethical dilemmas and the potential for artificial intelligence to surpass human oversight.

To far, no comprehensive AGI system has been disclosed. Large technological businesses devote substantial sums of money in the aspiration of becoming pioneers in the successful development of an AGI system.
