Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, renowned for her polka dots, mirrored installations and vibrant pumpkin sculptures, passed away in Tokyo on August 14, 2026, at the age of 97. Her seven-decade career established her as one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary art, with an influence extending far beyond museums and galleries.

Born in Matsumoto, Japan, in 1929, Kusama began developing her signature visual language from childhood experiences of recurring patterns and hallucinations. These visions inspired her celebrated Infinity Nets paintings and Infinity Mirror Rooms, exploring repetition, self-obliteration and the relationship between individuals and infinite space.

After moving to New York in 1957, Kusama became part of the city's experimental art scene, creating paintings, sculptures, immersive environments and performances that challenged conventional artistic boundaries. Her mirrored installations later gained international recognition, attracting audiences through their seemingly endless reflections and immersive experiences.

Kusama's influence also extended into luxury fashion, most notably through her collaborations with Louis Vuitton. Her signature motifs appeared across handbags, clothing, storefronts and large-scale installations, demonstrating how a distinctive artistic identity could transcend traditional mediums without losing its original character.

Although her work became widely celebrated for its playful colors and instantly recognizable patterns, Kusama's artistic practice remained rooted in deeper explorations of identity, mortality and infinity. Her legacy lies not simply in creating iconic imagery, but in establishing a visual universe that continues to resonate across art, fashion and popular culture.
